The Frostburg State men's tennis team split its two matches at the Villa Julie College Invitational this past weekend. The Bobcats (4-3) fell to Dickinson, 8-1, on Saturday before posting a 7-1 win over Villa Julie Sunday morning.
Junior Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) picked up FSU's lone point against Dickinson, downing Greg Bertelsen, 8-4, at the top singles flight.
Sophomores Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) and Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) dropped close 8-5 matches at the second and fifth spots, respectively.
All three Bobcat doubles teams fell by 8-5 scores.
Frostburg State rebounded nicely with the 7-1 win against host Villa Julie.
Stephens teamed with freshman Allan Blanks (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) for a 6-4 win at the No. 2 tandem flight, while Lyst and Spangenberg picked up a forfeit victory at No. 3.
Junior Pete Della-Luna (Moshpee, Mass./Longmeadow) and senior Scott Ruest (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) did not complete their match at the No. 1 spot.
The Bobcats had little trouble in singles play, winning five of the six matches.
Stephens posted an 8-1 victory against Luke Sinnen at the top flight, while Lyst followed with an 8-3 defeat of Adam Eisenberg at the second position.
Spangenberg blanked Mike Lynch, 8-0, at the fifth spot. Ruest and Della-Luna were forfeit winners at the third and sixth positins, respectively.
Senior Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) dropped a hard-fought 9-7 match to Jason Kondilas at the No. 4 flight.
Stephens and Lyst were both named to the All-Tournament Team for their solid performances.
The Bobcats return to action on Tuesday when they visit Penn State Altoona at 3:30 pm.
