WEXFORD, Pa. -
For the first time since 2001, the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Men’s Tennis Championship was captured by Frostburg State. On Saturday, FSU won three individual titles and one doubles title on its way to knocking off two-time defending champion Penn State Altoona.
Penn State Behrend finished in third place and Pitt-Greensburg came in fourth.
Junior Matt Chisholm (La Plata, Md./La Plata) led the Bobcats after capturing No. 3 singles for the third-consecutive year. Junior Ryan Rice (Hampton, Va./Shape American) won the No. 4 singles title and senior Chris Schoenbauer (Riva, Md./South River) won the No. 6 singles titles. In doubles, Rice and senior Andy Chisholm (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) combined to earn the title in the No. 2 spot.
M. Chisholm took down Pitt-Greensburg’s Andrew Hallman 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and got past Jim Palmer of Penn State Behrend in the finals, 6-3, 6-4.
Rice earned the singles title after shutting out UPG’s Matt Marsella in the opening round 6-0, 6-0 and defeating Altoona’s Andy Brunhuber 6-3, 6-1.
Schoenbauer won No. 5 singles downing UPG’s Jeff Grasmeder 6-2, 6-1 and PSA’s Jeff Tarkington in the finals, 6-4, 6-4.
A. Chisholm and Rice won No. 2 doubles after defeating Greensburg’s team of Grasmeder/Marsella 8-6 and Altoona’s tandem of Pat Cooper/Brunhuber 8-3.
FSU also posted three runner-up finishes. In No. 2 singles, A. Chisholm finished second to PSB’s Miles Boyea, losing in the finals 6-1, 6-4. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Greg Shed (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and M. Chisholm fell to PSA’s Will Wray and Brian Bascome in the finals while in No. 3 doubles, Schoenbauer and senior Brad Yoder lost to PSA’s Tarkington/Jared Rute, 8-6.
