The Frostburg State men's tennis team upped their season record to 8-5 by winning a close 5-4 match at Waynesburg College yesterday.
The Bobcats captured four of the singles matches and FSU junior Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and sophomore Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) teamed to win 8-5 at No. 1 doubles to seal the victory.
Stephens continued his torrid pace at No. 1 singles, notching his 12th consecutive win with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Eric Kaluza.
Lyst captured FSU's second victory on the day. He won No. 2 singles when Waynesburg's Mike Pamepinto retired in the second set.
Bobcat senior Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) downed Guillermo Pradera, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Frostburg State junior Pete Della-Luna (Moshpee, Mass./Longmeadow) capped off the Red and Black's singles scoring by taking a 6-0, 6-2 win over the Yellowjackets' Nate Smucher.
Sophomore Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) stumbled in the day's tightest singles match, losing a three-set thriller to Mark Gates.
Freshman Allan Blanks (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) lost to Ryan Floyd 6-1,6-2 in No. 6 singles.
Shillinger and Della Luna lost No. 2 doubles 8-6 to Pradera and Gates. The Yellowjackets (3-10) finished off the scoring by winning the No. 3 doubles contest over the Bobcat tandem of Spargenburg and Blanks 8-2.
The Bobcats (8-5, 2-2 AMCC) return to action at 11:00 am Saturday when they host Penn State Behrend for an AMCC match.Frostburg State will then host PAC opponent Grove City at 3:00 pm in a non-conference tilt.
