More than 500 Participate in Annual Beautify the ’Burg
Some of the more than 500 volunteers who worked to “Beautify the 'Burg” in early May gather at the kickoff in front of St. Michael’s Church.

Frostburg’s annual Beautify the ’Burg event had a total of 521 students, community members and city employees serving over 1,800 hours in one day to help make Frostburg a better place. This year’s 14th annual Beautify the ’Burg, formally called the Day of Caring and Sharing, took place on Saturday, May 3.

Volunteers swept grit from sidewalks, painted light posts and curbs, mulched gardens, planted trees and flowers, washed windows and police cars, picked up trash, cleaned up the Depot area and much more.

One special service that was performed was the planting of trees in recognition of Frostburg receiving Tree City USA recognition in April. The city’s Shade Tree Commission, made up of local citizens and representatives from FSU who were also instrumental in the Tree Campus USA designation, have been working toward this recognition for the past year.

The day ended with lunch at City Place where Mayor W. Robert Flanigan and FSU President Jonathan Gibralter took the time to thank the volunteers. Sponsors included FSU, FSU Greek Life, the City of Frostburg, Frostburg First, Frostburg Sustaining Campus and Community Dialogue Series and AmeriCorps. Food Lion, Save-A-Lot and Fat Boys Pizza were recognized for their donations.
