NASPA Names Frostburg State University a Lead Institution in Civic Engagement

Frostburg State University has been selected to participate in a national initiative on civic learning and democratic engagement, one of 73 colleges and universities nationwide designated as a Lead Institution by NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, the leading voice for the student affairs profession.

As a participating institution in NASPA’s initiative, FSU will continue to encourage students’ civic development through thoughtful community partnerships, engaging leadership opportunities and democratic participation.

“I am proud that Frostburg State University has been selected to become a part of this network on institutions dedicated to developing students’ sense of civic identity,” said FSU President Jonathan Gibralter. “Being recognized as a national leader in this field is a reflection of quality of our current efforts and also our ongoing commitment to inspiring students to challenge themselves through leadership and service.”

Over the coming year, FSU will participate in programming and scholarly activities to share information and resources, reflect on lessons learned through civic leadership work on the campus and collaborate with partner institutions. FSU has committed to a series of strategies to make civic learning and democratic engagement an integrated and core component of Student and Educational Services through planning, partnerships and assessment.

“Participating in this initiative will enable us to share best practices in this area with colleagues across the country,” said Dr. Tom Bowling, vice president for Student and Educational Services. “I also anticipate that the network will provide us additional insight into the student learning that results from our civic engagement efforts.”

“NASPA has long been committed to ensuring that a college education includes developing students as leaders and as citizens through a commitment to civic engagement,” said Dr. Kevin Kruger, NASPA president. “Through the Lead Initiative, NASPA is shining light on the unique contributions that student affairs professionals are making to democratic engagement. In a time of concern and worry about our civic society, it is critical that college administrators are doing all that they can to present students with opportunities to help them develop as productive and engaged citizens.”
