NCAA CHOICES Grant to Expand FSU’s Efforts to Combat Alcohol Abuse
07/14/2011

FROSTBURG, Md.–As part of its ongoing efforts to prevent high-risk drinking and to create a sense of ownership among its students in building a wellness-centered campus, Frostburg State University recently was awarded an NCAA Choices Grant from the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The grants are available to NCAA member institutions who wish to integrate athletics into campuswide efforts to reduce alcohol abuse.

“By combining our existing efforts to encourage student wellness and abuse protection with the new tools enabled through the NCAA CHOICES grant, FSU will continue to make a real, measurable impact on the alcohol choices of our students,” said FSU President Jonathan Gibralter. “While these tools will focus their attention on our at-risk students such as athletes, first-year students and fraternal organization members, the program will have a measurable, positive effect on the health, wellness and alcohol abuse rates of all FSU students.”

With the grant’s funds, FSU’s Office of Student and Educational Services and the President’s Alcohol Task Force will launch CHILL CHOICES, a new three-year project designed to:

• Encourage positive socialization through hosting late-night and weekend programs and supporting FSU Athletic and Greek events

• Educate student-athletes, incoming and first-year students and its Greek community on the importance of low- and no-risk drinking behaviors through interactive group training promoting bystander intervention strategies

• Incorporate an additional alcohol and other drug education presence within specific academic programs

• Reduce the perceived prevalence of high-risk alcohol and other drug behaviors within FSU’s campus community by infusing alcohol and other drug education within a social media campaign starring FSU student-athletes and other noted student leaders in student organizations that already promote wellness and alcohol education

• Continue monitoring FSU’s overall institutional effectiveness education efforts on these topics through qualitative and quantitative research efforts

Dr. Jesse Ketterman, dean of students, Jeff Graham, associate dean of students, and April Baer, coordinator of University Wellness, will serve as principal program coordinators of CHILL CHOICES. The program is slated to begin June 2011 and run consecutively until June 30, 2014.
