New B'er Chayim Rabbi to Discuss "Understanding Judaism" at FSU

Rabbi Stephen Sniderman, who has led Cumberland's B'er Chayim Congregation since January, will speak at Frostburg State University on "Who Are the Jews and What is Judaism" Monday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Lane University Center 201, the Atkinson Room. The presentation, in which he will speak on the beliefs and customs of Judaism, is free and open to the public.

Before coming to Cumberland, Sniderman served congregations in Sharon, Pa., and Rockford, Ill. Before that, he was the rabbi of the Hillel Foundation at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Sniderman was born in Toronto, Canada.

The program is sponsored by Hillel Club, United Campus Ministry, and Catholic Campus Ministry.

FSU's United Campus Ministry will also offer a number of other activities that are open to the public during the fall semester. The events are at 7:30 p.m. in Lewis J. Ort Library room 237 unless otherwise noted. The events are:

-- Wednesday, Oct. 1 - "Faith and Science: Is There a Conflict," presented by FSU philosophy professor Dr. Angelo Bucchino.

-- Monday, Oct. 13 - "Understanding Islam," presented in Lane University Center 201, the Atkinson Room. Imam Qasim Burmi, leader of The Islamic Society of Western Maryland in Hagerstown, will speak. This event is sponsored by United Campus Ministry, Catholic Campus Ministry and Hillel.

-- Wednesday, Nov. 5 - "Is Forgiveness Possible," a "20/20" video about a police officer who forgave his assailant.

-- Wednesday, Dec. 3 - "Spirituality and Christmas Music: Bring Your Own," in which participants will listen to Christmas music and discuss those songs that have touched their souls.
