Frostburg State University has added three new majors to the 34 undergraduate degree programs it offers currently. Starting in the fall of 2001, students will be able to major in Dance, Exercise and Sport Science and Theatre.
Dance and Theatre were previously offered as minors. Theatre was also available as a major concentration in the Speech Communication and Theatre degree program, now called Communication Studies.
Exercise and Sport Science has grown out of a number of changes in the department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, many resulting from adjustments made in the application process for National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) approval.
Previously, students in the department had a choice of Recreation or Health and Physical Education. Health and Physical Education majors then would choose a track among teacher education, athletic training, health fitness and coaching. As the major evolved, the department found it was serving two very different audiences, those who planned to teach and those who didn't, according to Department Chair Dr. Kurt Wolfe Jr.
As the program stands now, a major in Exercise and Sport Science can choose a concentration from among Health Fitness, Athletic Training and Health Promotions.
Minors of Business for Science and Technology Majors, Forestry and Leadership Studies have also been added, bringing the total number of minors available to 34.
FSU has also added several concentrations and tracks within majors. A concentration requires at least 25 credits of specialized coursework, while a track requires somewhat less.
In Biology, concentrations have been added in Biotechnology and Environmental Science. Chemistry has added Biochemistry and Professional Chemistry. Earth Science also has added an Environmental Science concentration. In English, concentrations have been added in Literature, Creative Writing and Professional Writing.
History has added concentrations in International History, History of the Americas and Public History. Music has added Vocal Performance and Music Management. And Recreation and Parks Management now has concentrations in Adventure Sports, Community Program Delivery, Hospitality Management and Tourism.
Tracks of Instrumental and Piano Performance have been added to Music. Traditional Physics and Engineering Physics tracks have been added to Physics. And Sociology has added General Sociology and Applied Sociology tracks.
