New Stars Emerge for Track and Field at Wheeling Jesuit Invitational

WHEELING, WV — Several new stars emerged for Frostburg State at the First Annual Bill Van Horne Track and Field Invitational held Saturday at Wheeling Jesuit University.

On the men’s side, sophomore Randy Belt (Upper Marlboro, Md./Patuxent) won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a solid time of 55.99 seconds, just shy of the provisional NCAA national championship qualifying mark of 54.40.

Belt also placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.26 seconds.

Junior Ryan Campbell (Port Republic, Md./Patuxent) was not far behind Belt in the 400-meter IH, finishing second in a time of 58.09.

Freshman Justin Marshall (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) placed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while sophomore Patrick Malone (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) was seventh in the javelin with a toss of 172-11.

Freshman Jarred Boehner (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) ran an impressive 800-meters with a time of 2:03.27 to place 15th, and freshman Ron Lipscomb (Lonaconing, Md./Northern Garrett) was not far behind, finishing 18th in 2:04.46.

Junior Mike Replogle (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) set a personal-record in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:15.73 to place eighth. He was also 17th in the 5,000-meter run in 16:38.61.

On the women’s side, junior Maria Ferguson (Fairmount Heights, Md./Laurel) captured the 400-meter dash in a time of 60.19 to beat a field of Division I and II schools. She also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.70 to edge junior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler), who finished third in the event in 26.09.

Junior Inga Olsen (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) was eighth in the 3,000-meter run and sophomore Katy Eads (West Point, Iowa/Central Lee) was seventh in the 5,000-meter run.

Sophomore Katherine Scruggs (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) placed seventh in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, and sophomore Trista Smith (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) set a personal-record in the hammer with a toss of 116-2 to finish seventh.

"Overall, we ran tough considering the competition and the weather conditions," said FSU head coach Felix Moreno. "It was cold for the sprinters, and we had to scratch many athletes to prevent injury."

The Bobcats return to action on Saturday in the Lynchburg (Va.) Classic.
