New Weather Radio Station Operational
05/22/2001

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio station installed on Dan's Mountain near Frostburg is now broadcasting weather forecasts, as well as potentially life-saving severe weather warnings and hazard information 24 hours a day.

The station serves seven counties in three states: Allegany and Garrett counties in Maryland; Bedford and Somerset counties in Pennsylvania; and Mineral, Grant and Hampshire counties in West Virginia. The station's assigned frequency is 162.425 MHz. A special weather radio receiver or scanner, available at most electronics stores or through catalogs, is needed to pick up the signal.

Installation of the station was made possible through the efforts of the National Weather Service, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, Frostburg State University and the university's public radio station WFWM.

Additional information about the new weather station is available by calling WFWM radio at (301) 687-4143 or visit the NOAA Weather Radio Web site at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/ .
