Noted Poet to Appear at Frostburg State University
09/15/2000

Acclaimed poet James Harms will present a poetry reading at Frostburg State University on Monday, Oct. 2, to at 7:30 p.m. in the F. Perry Smith Studio Theatre of the Performing Arts Center.

This event is sponsored by the FSU Western Maryland Writer's Workshop and the Department of English.

Now director of the creative writing program at West Virginia University, Harms is a native of California. His two collections of poems, "Modern Ocean" (1992) and "The Joy Addict" (1998), are published by the Carnegie Mellon University Press. "The Joy Addict" won him a PEN/Revson Fellowship and the following praise from the judges: "James Harms has a real gift for engaging his reader with the palpability of loss and what he terms 'the stillness that follows loss.'"

Harms' poetry is heralded for "the dailiness of revelation," the importance of small gestures and the need to see more clearly. His awards include the John Ciardi Fellowship from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, two Pushcart Prizes, the Academy of American Poets Prize and Fellowships in Creative Writing from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts and the Pennsylvania Councils on the Arts. Last year he received the WVU Benedum Distinguished Scholar Award for 1999-2000 and was named the 1999 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching/CASE West Virginia Professor of the Year.

The reading is free and open to the public. A reception and book-signing will follow. For more information, call the FSU Department of English at 301-687-4221. FSU is committed to making all of its programs, services and activities accessible to persons with disabilities.
