Olson Named Football Gazette Preseason All-American
08/01/2003

FROSTBURG, MD — Frostburg State University tight end Roy Olson (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) earned numerous honors and awards after a stellar junior season, and he recently added to his collection before playing a single down of his final year.

The 6-1, 245-pound Olson was named to Don Hansen's Football Gazette 2003 NCAA Division III Preseason All-America first team and is the lone Atlantic Central Football Conference player among the 75 athletes who compile the three-team All-America squad.

Olson, who transferred to Frostburg State from Ferrum (Va.) College last year, enjoyed one of the top seasons by a tight end in Bobcat history.

He caught 44 passes for a team-high 825 yards (18.8 yards per catch) and tied for the team lead in both touchdown catches (8) and points (48).

Olson earned first-team All-ACFC, second-team Football Gazette All-South Region, third-team Hewlett Packard All-America and second-team Football Gazette All-America honors.

"Roy had an outstanding season last year and has the ability to be a real force again in 2003," said Frostburg State head coach Rubin Stevenson, who guided the Bobcats to a 6-5 overall record, the ACFC title, the Regents Cup crown (awarded to the winner of the FSU-Salisbury game) and an appearance in the ECAC Southwest Championship. "He's got size and speed, and he's a great player to coach."

Frostburg State opens its season September 13 when it visits Apprentice at 1:00 pm.
