ERIE, PA —
Penn State Behrend sophomore Casey Ponsoll scored a game-high 22 points, and Frostburg State couldn't overcome a poor first half as the Lions handed the Bobcats their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference loss of the season, 66-57, Saturday afternoon at the Junker Center.
The Bobcats (6-7 overall, 2-1 AMCC) struggled in the first half, hitting just 4-of-20 shots from the field en route to a 28-12 halftime deficit.
Junior A.J. Ernst (Minster, Ohio/Minster) opened the scoring with a three-pointer 2:26 into the game, but Ponsoll nailed a three-pointer to cap an 18-3 Behrend run over the next 12 minutes.
Frostburg State junior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Albert Einstein) snapped the blitz with a pair of free throws to bring the Bobcats to within 18-8 with 5:38 left in the first half, but the Lions (9-5, 3-1) closed out the opening stanza with a 10-4 run to take a commanding 16-point lead at the break.
The Bobcats came out hot in the second half, and used a 21-9 run over the first 10 minutes to close to within four, 37-33.
Freshman Kamillo Rosenthal (Munich, Germany/Catholic (Va.)) drained a pair of three-pointers to open the stanza, and junior DeNelle Hale (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) capped an 8-0 spurt with a jumper.
Sophomore Ryan Grabill's (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) three-pointer brought FSU to within four, but the Lions answered quickly, ripping off seven consecutive points to move in front again by double digits.
Frostburg State again fought back, and a Bowery lay-up narrowed the gap to just three, 51-48, with 3:28 left.
Ponsoll's game-high fourth three-pointer put the Lions in front, 56-48, with 1:49 to go, but again the Bobcats challenged, scoring the next six points for a 56-54 deficit with just 44 seconds remaining.
But, the Lions sealed the win with a perfect 10-of-10 performance from the free-throw line in the closing seconds, while the Bobcats missed five of their last six shots from the floor.
Bowery scored 20 points to lead FSU in scoring for the eighth straight game, while senior Sean Brown (Baltimore, Md./North County) added 12 points.
Steve Merrill had 16 points for Penn State Behrend.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday when they visit Penn State Altoona in another key AMCC contest at 8 p.m.
