10/07/2003

Frostburg State University's Homecoming Weekend will come to a close with the President's Concert, Sunday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center's Pealer Recital Hall. Featuring outstanding student and alumni musicians, new faculty artists, the Guitar Ensemble and FSU Chamber Choir (formerly Collegium Musicum), the concert is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Dr. Karen Soderberg, the FSU Chamber Choir's performance will include "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morton Lauridsen, the Japanese folk song "Kuroda Bushi" and the vocal jazz selection "Blackberry Winter" by Dave Cross. Betty Jane Phillips will accompany the Chamber Choir on piano.

Alumnus Brian Plitnik, trombone, will perform "The Hunting of the Snark" by Arne Nordheim. Plitnik has earned music degrees from both FSU and West Virginia University. In addition to being the Low Brass instructor at FSU, Plitnik has served as adjunct faculty at WVU, where he is also pursuing a doctorate of musical arts degree in trombone performance.

Faculty artists include Corey Trahan, baritone, and Mark Gallagher, clarinet. Trahan, a native of Baton Rouge, La., is an active performer in opera, musical theatre, operetta, oratorio and recital venues throughout the United States. He will perform "Long Time Ago" by Aaron Copland, "Tres Parisienne" from Lehar's "Merry Widow" and George Gershwin's "Our Love Is Here to Stay." Clarinetist Mark Gallagher, adjunct professor in theory and clarinet performance, will perform Francois Devienne's "Deux Ieme Sonate." He is actively involved as a solo performer throughout the United States and Europe, and a member of the Semplice Harbor Winds.
