Robert O’Neal to Present Senior Percussion Recital at FSU
02/10/2012

Frostburg State University student Robert O’Neal will present his senior percussion recital on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. in Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Performing Arts Center. The recital is free and open to the public.

O’Neal will play pieces on various percussion instruments such as the vibraphone, timpani and marimba. He will also perform a multiple percussion piece accompanied by pre-recorded “Soundscape” – “Garage Drummer” by James Campbell. This piece was inspired by the composer’s experiences with garage band jam sessions. At first, the occupants of the house notice some quiet random noises seeping through the walls from the garage. As the jam session develops, the drumming becomes more intense and the band a cacophony of sound, until the occupants are driven out of the house.

O’Neal will also perform “Partita No. 3 in E Major BWV 1006” by Johann Sebastian Bach, “Nancy” by Emmanuel Séjourné, “The Offering” by Michael Burritt, “Gray 102” by Colin Tribby with its “funk-influenced bass line,” as well as “Blues for Gilbert” by Mark Glentworth.

O’Neal studies percussion with FSU instructor Dr. Ronald Horner. He is a member of the FSU Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble and is an honors student with membership in Phi Eta Sigma. A 2008 graduate of Century High School, O’Neal is a Music Education major and History minor. He expects to graduate from FSU in spring 2013.
