Salisbury rallied from a 15-point deficit midway through the second half to force overtime and then outscored Waynesburg 9-4 in the extra session to claim a 78-73 win in the consolation game of the Frostburg State Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
Salisbury junior Dameon Gibbs (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook) scored a team-high 20 points, grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and blocked three shots, while freshman Sean Whitaker (Delhi, N.Y./Delaware Academy) added 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Sophomore Neil Tucker (Suitland, Md./Central) had 12 points.
Freshman Beau Wilson (Daybrook, W.Va./Clay-Battelle) led Waynesburg with a game-high 22 points and five steals, but no other Yellow Jacket player scored in double figures.
Salisbury (1-1) trailed by as many as 15, 64-49, with 10:57 left in regulation before storming back. Gibbs sank back-to-back lay ups to pull the Sea Gulls to within 66-64 and then followed with a block and rebound that led to a Tucker three-pointer which gave Salisbury a 67-66 advantage with 2:49 left.
Wilson sank a pair of free throws to put Waynesburg back in front 68-67 with 1:32 remaining, but Gibbs gave his squad the lead once again with two free throws of his own with 1:12 to go.
The Yellow Jackets knotted the score at 69 when junior Ray Gillespie (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) hit one of two free throws with 50 seconds left in regulation.
Both teams had chances to win the game in the closing moments. Waynesburg missed its last three shots, including two in the final four seconds, while Salisbury couldn't connect on its final attempt.
Gibbs scored Salisbury's first six of points in the overtime session as the Sea Gulls took a 75-71 lead with 1:34 left.
Waynesburg closed to within two on a jumper by senior Mike King (Paden City, W.Va./Paden City), but Salisbury hit three of four shots from the free throw line to seal the win.
