Sam Griffith Presented With FSU Foundation Pinnacle Award
03/25/2014

Sam Griffith Presented With FSU Foundation Pinnacle Award
Sam Griffith, center, is presented the Pinnacle Award by Frostburg State University Foundation President Quincy Crawford, left, and FSU President Jonathan Gibralter.

Over the years, whether Sam Griffith was leading the Frostburg State University Foundation Board through a major fundraising campaign, serving on the College of Business Advisory Board or sharing his professional insights with students, he has always recognized the region’s need for the University and provided FSU with endless support, inspiration and leadership.

Not surprisingly then, he was honored with the Pinnacle Award, the highest honor bestowed by the FSU Foundation, during the University’s annual Sloop Institute for Excellence in Leadership on March 7. He is the eighth recipient of the award since it was created in 1993, a recognition that celebrates the time, treasure and hard work individuals give to the FSU Foundation in support of the mission of FSU.

“Sam has made our University his personal cause. And he gives selflessly to ensure Frostburg and all of its students succeed,” said current FSU Foundation President Quincy Crawford. “He recognizes the importance of our institution in the cultural, economic and educational health of the Western Maryland region, and he dedicates his time and talent to ensure our University and its students excel.”

Griffith has served on the FSU Foundation Board since 2005. He was president from 2007 to 2011, the period covered by the Staking Our Claim campaign, which raised $16.7 million, $1.7 million beyond the goal. While he never attended FSU, the Alumni Association named him an honorary alumnus in 2010.

“I’m humbled and honored to be considered for this award, Griffith said. “Frostburg State University as an institution just pulls you in and becomes a part of you.”

In addition to his tireless work on the FSU Foundation Board, Griffith has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the region. He has put Western Maryland on the map through his role as president and CEO of the National Jet Co. in LaVale, Md., and he gives back to his community through many other volunteer activities. He is an active member of the Cumberland Rotary and a Paul Harris Award Recipient, has served as the president of the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce Board, on the board of the Western Maryland Health System and as an elder of First Presbyterian Church in Cumberland. He has been an active volunteer in the NAILS Program, serving “welcoming meals” to the volunteer work groups that arrive from out of town to repair homes in the community.

Griffith has served on many professional boards, including on the board of directors for the Maryland Association of CPAs and as past president of the Cumberland Chapter of the Maryland Association of CPAs.

His service to the students of FSU includes the yearly Students Night with the Maryland Association of CPAs, a training session that gives students the opportunity to connect with professionals. He is also a member of the College of Business Advisory Board and often makes himself available to speak to students and opens up his home to FSU students during Homecoming.

Previous Pinnacle recipients are Ralph Race, Lillian Wellner, Al Boxley, Walter Hedrick, Leonard Schwab, Ken Kennedy and Gladys Faherty.
