Erie, Pa. ...
Seven Frostburg State athletes were named to the All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference baseball team in a recent vote by the league's head coaches.
Senior outfielder Tom Shaffer (Martinsburg, Pa./Central), junior first baseman Steve Simpson (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest), sophomore shortstop Dave Sanchez (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) and freshman designated hitter Eric Edelman (Silver Spring, Md./Sherwood) were all named to the first team.
Shaffer finished third on the team with a .393 batting average and led the Bobcats with 46 hits and 69 total bases. He also ranked second with 32 RBIs, tied for second with 12 doubles and tied for fourth with three home runs. He was the only Bobcat to play in all 40 regular-season games.
Simpson hit .345 in his first year with FSU and led the team with 42 runs and 38 walks. He ranked second in on-base percentage (.513), tied for second in home runs (5) and doubles (12) and finished third in both hits (39) and RBIs (31).
Sanchez posted a .295 batting average with four doubles, a triple, a home run and 16 RBIs. He had 31 hits and scored 24 runs.
Edelman enjoyed a solid rookie season, ranking fourth on the team with a .370 batting average and finishing third in both slugging percentage (.630) and on-base percentage (.508). He had 17 hits, three doubles, three home runs and 15 RBIs.
Junior Darron Jones (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill), freshman Scott Feller (Coral Springs, Fla./American Heritage) and freshman Sean Davis (Olney, Md./Sherwood) were named to the honorable mention squad.
Jones rebounded from arm injuries that sidelined him the previous two seasons to post a 6-4 record and a 5.87 ERA. He struck out 40 and walked 26 in 46.0 innings. His six wins and two complete games led the team, and he tied for first on the squad with 10 starts and one shutout. He also picked up a save.
Feller, who saw time at first base, in the outfield and as the designated hitter, finished second on the team with a .427 batting average and 41 hits. He also smacked a club-high 13 doubles to go along with 26 RBIs, 23 runs scored, two home runs and a triple.
Davis, who split time at second and third, hit .314 with five doubles, a home run and 24 RBIs. He recorded 38 hits and scored 29 runs.
Frostburg State finished the regular-season 25-15 overall and 7-3 in the AMCC. The Bobcats, runners-up at the AMCC Tournament, now await a possible bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Region Championship to be held May 11-13.
