Seventh Annual Art and Writing Workshop to Feature Author and Performer
03/12/2012

The Frostburg Center for Creative Writing, in conjunction with the Allegany Arts Council, will host the Seventh Annual Art and Writing Workshop on Saturday, March 31, from noon to 4:30 p.m. in Dunkle Hall 101 on the FSU campus. The workshop will feature two sessions to choose from: “Making Art From Literature” by Jamison Odone and “Art as a Muse” by Gabrielle Zane.

Odone is an assistant professor of visual arts and is in charge of the illustration focus at FSU. He is a published author and illustrator, and his first book, “Honey Badgers,” was critically acclaimed in 2007. A 40-page picture book, “Mole Had Everything,” is to be released in April. In his session, “Making Art From Literature,” participants will create text and image pieces, primarily through drawing and hand-lettering. Participants should bring pens, pencils and erasers, as well as colored pencils or markers if available. Students should also bring whatever text sources inspire them.

Zane is a performer, writer and visual artist and has taught creative writing, performance and visual arts throughout New England. She was the 1997 Connecticut Individual Performance Poetry Champion and winner of the 1997 Slam Master’s Slam in Chicago. Curbstone Press published her chapbook of poems, “Being Your Eyes.” In her session, “Art as a Muse,” participants will learn how to interact with and respond to all types of art to create stories and poems. Students are encouraged to bring pictures of their favorite artwork.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information or to register, email cwcenter@frostburg.edu with your name, address and workshop selection.
