Seventh-Seeded Frostburg State Wins in the Bottom of the Ninth, Eliminates Fourth-Seeded Gwynedd-Mercy
BOYERTOWN, Pa. —
Sophomore Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford)
lifted seventh-seeded Frostburg State to a 3-2 win over fourth-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy with the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth in the 2006 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional at Bear Stadium, Friday morning.
FSU (29-12) advances to face Montclair State (29-17-2) in the 10th game of the regional this evening at 7:00 pm. The contest will be a rematch of the second game of the tournament which Frostburg State won, 6-2. GMC finishes the season with a 31-15 overall record.
With the game tied at two in the ninth, sophomore Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) singled to right and reached second when the next batter, classmate Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point), walked. Freshman Brian Short (Ashburn, Va./Paul VI) then advanced the pair with a sacrifice bunt and Mitchell singled home Daddura with a shot to center field.
The Griffins held the early lead after the first, when Ken Bengston doubled to right field and scored on a two-out RBI-double from Troy Peiffer.
The Bobcats evened the score at 1-1 in the third when junior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) singled home Mitchell. Mitchell reached base after being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a junior Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson) sacrifice bunt. Mitchell then made third on an error by the Gwynedd-Mercy infield.
Matt Martin put the Griffins back on top, 2-1, with his first homerun of the season in the fifth. GMC threatened in the sixth loading the bases with a walk followed by back-to-back singles. Sophomore starter John Micklus (La Plata, Md./McDonough) got out of the jam when J.B. Meadows lined out to FSU firstbase Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford). Peake ended another GMC scoring opportunity in the seventh. With two outs and a runner on third, he caught a foul ball while falling over the first-base side fence for the third out of the inning.
The Bobcats evened the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Speights led off the inning with a single through the right side. Speights then took second on a Short sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Speights scored when Jones singled to center, setting up the dramatic ninth inning.
Micklus tossed the complete game allowing two runs on 10 hits while fanning six. Josh Thomas suffered the loss for Gwynedd-Mercy tossing 8.2 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on nine hits.
