Several Bobcats Qualify for Track and Field National Championships With Strong Performances at Morgan State Invitational

BALTIMORE — Several members of the Frostburg State track and field teams qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships with their performances last Saturday at the Morgan State University Invitational at Hughes Stadium.

Running against mostly Division I competition, junior Dante Myles (Hyattsville, Md./Archbishop Carroll) finished fifth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.64 to meet the provisional qualifying standard for the national championships.

Myles, last year's 100-meter runner-up in 10.65 seconds, owns the third-fastest time in the 100-meters in Division III this season as well as the fifth-best time in the 200. He provisionally qualified for the 200 at the Lynchburg Invitional April 13.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of junior Karold Gray (Bowie, Md./Southern), junior Ockeem Ellis (Glen Burnie, Md./North County), junior Tyque McCarthy (Bowie, Md./Central) and Myles placed fourth in a time of 41.72 seconds to also provisionally qualify for this year's national championship meet. Their time is the sixth-fastest in Division III this season.

On the women's side, junior Maria Ferguson (Fairmount Heights, Md./Laurel) met the provisional standard for the national championships in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.02 seconds. She added a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 12.43 seconds.

She provisionally qualified for nationals in the 100-meters earlier this season in 12.18 seconds, the fourth-quickest time in Division III this year.

The women's 4x100-meter team of freshman Mysel Abrokwa (Takoma Park, Md./Blair), Ferguson, freshman Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) and junior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) improved on their previous NCAA qualifying time, dropping from 49.11 seconds to 48.63. They finished eighth among a field of mainly Division I teams.

The quartet also placed fifth in the 4x400-meter relay in a season-best time of 4:00.74, just shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 3:59.10.

Numerous other Bobcats turned in top-10 showings at Morgan State.

Sophomore Katy Eads (West Point, Iowa/Central Lee) was sixth in the 3,000-meter run in 12:10.68 and also finished ninth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:35.93, while junior Inga Olsen (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) turned in a seventh-place finish in the 3,000-meter run in 12:11.39.

Sophomore Katherine Scruggs (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) was ninth in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.76.

Freshman John Densmore (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) ran the 1,500-meters in 4:29.72 to finish ninth, while sophomore Travis Bouldin (Greensboro, Md./North Caroline) was sixth in both the long jump (21-5.5) and triple jump (43-7.75).

The men's 4x200-meter relay was second in 1:27.46.

Sophomore Randy Belt (Upper Marlboro, Md./Patuxent) continued to chase the NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 400-meter hurdles, running the event in 56.33 seconds. The standard is 54.40.

Frostburg State returns to action on Saturday, April 27 when is hosts the Bobcat Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
