Short Film “Haze” by FSU Student Kelly Courtney Wins Honorable Mention at BEA Festival of Media Arts
Frostburg State University’s Department of Mass Communication announces that student Kelly Courtney’s short film “Haze” was awarded an Honorable Mention award in the Broadcast Education Association’s 2011 Festival of Media Arts. The BEA is the educational arm of the National Association of Broadcasters, and their annual festival is highly competitive with entries from colleges around the country.

A mass communication major with a focus in video production, Courtney made “Haze” last semester as a final project for Professor Micheal McAlexander’s MCOM 311 Single-Camera Production class. Courtney, who is from Cumberland, produced, directed and edited the film, as well as composed the music. She was assisted with lighting and electrical by another mass communication major, Jared Ritchey.

“Haze” is a suspenseful twist on death. In the film, Mary Ellen Courtney, played by Kelly’s grandmother, and Becca Kmieciak, a recent FSU Theatre graduate who plays the young Mary Ellen, take viewers into an unknown parallel filled with youth and unexpected surprises. After experiencing another routine evening, Mary Ellen wakes up to find herself youthful and in her 20s. This turn of events leads to another surprising discovery.
