Six Bobcats Selected to All-Conference Baseball Team

GIBSONIA, Pa. — Frostburg State had six players selected to the 2006 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Baseball Team. The all-conference team was announced Saturday evening following the conclusion of the AMCC Tournament.

Highlighting the group was senior pitcher Billye Hollister (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone), who was honored with his second-straight Co-Player of the Year award.

Hollister shares the Co-Player of the Year for the second-straight season with Penn State Altoona shortstop Tony Petulla.

Hollister has a 9-1 record including a perfect 5-0 mark against AMCC opponents. He is first in the league in innings pitched (81.0), second in strikeouts (76), ERA (2.22), wins, opposing batting average (.195) and runners picked off (4). Hollister currently ranks 24th in NCAA Division III in wins and 59th in ERA. He was also named to the All-AMCC first team.

Senior outfielder Kyle Mahan (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) is the only other Bobcat on the all-conference first team. Mahan leads the team in batting average (.389) and triples (4), and is second on the team in hits (42) and stolen bases (11) and third in runs (23) and RBIs (23).

Mahan accented his solid season with the game-winning RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat La Roche in the AMCC Championship game. Mahan earned Player of the Week honors for his effort against La Roche.

Garnering All-AMCC second team honors were junior outfielder Chris Jones (Baltimore, Md./Towson), sophomore third baseman Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) and sophomore first baseman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).

Jones is a second-team all-conference selection for the second consecutive year. From his lead-off spot, he leads the team with 40 runs scored, 47 hits, 15 stolen bases and 66 total bases. He is also second on the team in batting average (.383), at bats (121) and homeruns (4).

Barone, who is also a back-to-back second-team all-league honoree, leads the Bobcats with 13 doubles. He is second on the team in walks (18) and slugging percentage (.560), fourth in on-base percentage (.482) and batting average(.363) and fifth in total bases (51).

Peake leads FSU with six homeruns and 280 putouts. He is also second in RBIs (25) and is third in doubles (8), total plate appearances (138) and total bases (58) and fourth in walks (13).

Sophomore pitcher John Micklus (La Plata, Md./McDonough) was selected to the All-AMCC honorable mention squad. During the conference tournament, Micklus earned a win and a save to help the Bobcats advance to the NCAA Tournament. He was also selected as the AMCC Pitcher of the Week for his performance.

For the season, Micklus leads the team in appearances (17) and is second on the team in wins (6) and ERA (2.52) he is third in strikeouts (65) and innings pitched (53.2).

Seventh-seeded Frostburg State will take on second-seeded Montclair State this Wednesday at 1:00 pm in the NCAA Tournament in Boyertown, Pa. on the campus of Alvernia College.
