Softball Beats Hilbert, Falls to La Roche in AMCC Tournament
05/06/2005

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Frostburg State softball team needed only five innings to defeat Hilbert 14-0 in the play-in round of the AMCC Tournament Friday morning.

The No. 4 Bobcats then fell to No. 1 La Roche 4-2 in the double-elimination portion and will face Penn State Behrend in a loser's bracket contest Saturday at 10 am.

The Bobcats (17-18) had little trouble in their play-in victory over Hilbert at North Allegheny High School, as junior Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) scattered two hits over four innings and junior Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) went 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

After hitting two of the first three batters she faced to start the game, Cook settled down and retired the next eight Hawks before Amber Fie hit an infield single to second to start the fourth. One out later, Nicolette Newton laid down a bunt single to put runners on first and second, but Cook used a fielder’s choice and a strikeout to end the inning.

FSU got on the board in the first inning on a two-out RBI single by junior Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) and then blew the game open with six runs in the second.

The Bobcats blew the game open in the second, taking advantage of three Hawk errors to score six times. Sophomore Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) drilled a two-run double and Brown added a run-scoring double to highlight the inning.

Brown hit another RBI double in the third to give FSU an 8-0 lead and then capped her outstanding day with a two-run homer as part of a six-run fourth.

Sophomore Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) had a two-run double in the fourth as well.

Junior Shannon Sturtz (Middletown, Md./Middletown) needed just five pitches to retire Hilbert in the fifth as the game ended early due to the eight-run rule.

The Bobcats then battled top-seeded La Roche in the opening game of the double-elimination portion of the tournament at Redhawk Field.

Using its momemtum from the Hilbert win, FSU came out hitting and used a triple by Potts and another two-out RBI single by Savoye to jump ahead 1-0 after one inning of play.

However, the Redhawks took control with four runs in the bottom of the second and never looked back. Jennifer Yoho pulled La Roche even with an RBI single and Amanda Bressler drilled a two-out, two-run triple to right center to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage.

Bressler later scored on a wild pitch to cap the outburst.

FSU got a run back in the top of the third as Potts singled, moved to third on a two-base outfield error and scored on a ground out by Brown.

The Bobcats had runners at first and second with two outs in the fourth but couldn't capitalize and also stranded another runner in the fifth.

La Roche freshman Bethany Peracchino retired the final six FSU batters in order to pick up the complete-game win. She scattered seven hits and struck out five while allowing one earned run.

Cook (8-8) took the loss for FSU, allowing four runs on six hits in four innings of work.

In other action from Friday, No. 5 Penn State Behrend upset No. 3 Medaille 1-0 in the other play-in game before falling to No. 2 Pitt-Bradford 8-0 in five innings in the double elimination round.

The winner of the FSU-PSB game will advance to play the loser of the LAR/UPB contest Saturday at 3:00 pm.
