SALEM, VA —
Frostburg State won its fourth straight game with a 3-1 victory over Meredith College Saturday as part of the Ferrum Invitational Tournament at the James Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.
Meredith (5-2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Christian Gunter.
The Bobcats (4-2) tied it up with a run in the top of the fifth when sophomore Sarah Savoye (South River/Davidsonville, Md.) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Lindsey Secrest (Williamsport/Hagerstown, Md.), and scored on on a double by freshman Lori Potts (Loudoun Valley/Purcellville, Md.).
The Red and Black took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the sixth. With two outs, sophomore Jessica Smith (Allegany/La Vale, Md.) singled to center. Sophomore Megan Burner (Southern Garrett/Oakland, Md.) then singled to left and Savoye walked to load the bases. Secrest then hit a two-run single down the left field line to cap the scoring.
Meredith had a runner on third with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Potts retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Potts went the distance scattering seven hits, striking out three and walking three. She also helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a RBI.
"We played extremely well in a close ballgame," said head coach Chris Starke. "Our defense was solid, Pottsy pitched a great game and Lindsey came up with a clutch hit."
The Bobcats return to action at 4:00 p.m. when they face St. Joseph's (N.Y.)
