SALEM, VA -
Frostburg State split two more games on the second day of the Ferrum Invitational Tournament in Salem, Va. The Bobcats dropped their first game to Ferrum, 7-2, before rebounding with an 8-1 victory over Eastern Mennonite.
Ferrum, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament participant last year, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Junior Lindsay Cox tripled to right field and scored with help an FSU error, and the Panthers tacked on another run aided by a second Bobcat miscue.
Ferrum scored four more runs in the third inning and another in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.
FSU got its two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Richelle Foor (Everett/Everett, Pa.) beat out an infield single to shortstop to lead off the inning and freshman Ashley Martin (North Carrol/Manchester, Md.) followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence.
FSU threatened with two runners on in both the fifth and sixth innings but could not capitalize. The Bobcats left seven runners on base for the game.
Freshman pitcher Katie Nelson (Chesepeake/Pasadena, Md.) took the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season. She threw seven innings, gave up seven hits and seven runs, walked three and struck out four.
Freshman Trish Brown (North Carroll/Manchester, Md.) was 2-4, Foor was 2-3 and Martin was 1-3.
In game two,the Bobcats rebounded with an 8-1 victory. FSU broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the third inning.
Foor had an RBI-single to center field and an error by the centerfielder allowed freshmen Sarah Savoye (South River/Davidsonville, Md.) and Megan Burner (Southern Garrett/Oakland, Md.) to score.
The Red and Black added another run in the fifth inning when Savoye hit a one-out double and moved to third on an error. She later scored on a fielder's choice by Martin.
The Bobcats then put the game away with five runs in the seventh inning, aided by two EMU errors.
Sophomore Raelee Cassaza (Miller Place/Miller Place, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch, Foor had an RBI-single and Martin had an RBI-double to spark FSU.
Junior Shannon McQuillan (Archbishop Spaulding/Bowie, Md.) singled to left field and a fielding error by the left fielder allowed two more runs to score.
Sophomore Jen Vance (Fort Hill/Cumberland, Md.) picked up her first win of the season, throwing a complete game three-hitter. She allowed one run, struck out four and walked one.
Foor, Brown, Burner, Savoye and junior Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.) each had two hits for the Bobcats.
"We're happy to be 2-2 after our opening weekend," said head coach Chris Starke. "Our two losses came to two very good ball clubs. We've shown early that we can score a lot of runs, but we need to pick up our defensive intensity from here on out."
Frostburg State will return to action on Wednesday at home against Pitt-Greensburg in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
