FROSTBURG, MD —
Senior Kelly Woods went 5-for-8 with three home runs and eight RBIs to power visiting Penn State Behrend to doubleheader sweep of Frostburg State, 10-5 and 13-8, Saturday at Bobcat Field.
In the opener, the Lions (10-27) scored five unearned runs in the top of the seventh to snap a 5-5 tie. Penn State Behrend had runners on first and second with two outs, but three straight FSU errors and two singles blew the game open.
The Bobcats (8-15-1), who have dropped six straight, spotted the Lions a 1-0 lead in the first before scoring three times in the bottom of the frame.
Sophomore Stephanie Zych (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) led off with a double and later scored on a single by sophomore Richelle Foor (Everett, Pa./Everett). Foor then came home on a groundout, and senior Krissy Jackson (Frostburg, Md./Beall) capped the rally by scoring on a wild pitch.
The Lions moved back in front with a three-run second inning. Woods sparked the rally with a lead-off homer, and Penn State Behrend capitalized on two Bobcat errors to take a 4-3 lead. Woods gave the Lions a 5-3 lead with another solo home run in the third.
FSU pulled even in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single by sophomore Amber Blackmire (Hebron, Md./Mardela) and a run-scoring fielder's choice by sophomore Amy Sarro (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding).
The teams then battled through three scoreless innings before the Lions put the game away with their big seventh inning.
Woods finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while sophomore Becky Corbin and freshman Charity Marsh had two hits apiece as well for Behrend.
Zych and freshman Kristy Sipes (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) each had a pair hits for the Bobcats.
Freshman Jennifer Miller picked up the complete-game win for the Lions, scattering seven hits and allowing just one earned run.
FSU freshman Jen Vance (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) allowed eight hits and only three earned runs while striking out three in falling to 4-8 on the season.
In a back-and-forth nightcap, Woods went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and six RBIs as the Lions rallied from a 7-3 deficit for the victory.
FSU trailed, 2-0, heading into the bottom of the first before Jackson pulled the Bobcats even with a two-run blast. Penn State Behrend moved back in front in the second on Corbin's RBI-double in the second, but FSU exploded for five runs in their half of the inning.
Casazza and Jackson smacked RBI-doubles, Foor and Vance laced run-scoring singles and Sarro was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
However, Woods drilled a two-run single in the third and a two-run double in the fourth to push the Lions back in front for good. She capped her impressive afternoon with a two-run homer in the sixth which gave Behrend an 11-7 advantage.
Corbin added four hits and two RBIs for the Lions, who outslugged the Bobcats, 16-11.
The Bobcats were led by Jackson, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Zych and Vance also had two hits each.
Sophomore Stephanie Covert earned the victory despite giving up eight runs on 11 hits.
Casazza suffered the loss after being tagged for 16 hits and 12 earned runs.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they host Villa Julie in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
