SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV —
Frostburg State dropped a doubleheader at Division II Shepherd College Monday afternoon at Ram Field. The hosts posted a 10-1 win in the first game before completing the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, Shepherd freshman Christee Anderson tossed a one-hitter to lead the Rams. She also sparked a five-run first inning with a two-run triple as the Rams built a commanding 9-0 lead after three innings.
FSU's lone hit came in the fourth inning when freshman Raelee Casazza (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) doubled. Sophomore Richelle Foor (Everett, Pa./Everett) scored later in the inning on a groundout by sophomore Amber Blackmire (Hebron, Md./Mardela).
Bobcat freshman Jen Vance (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) took the loss after allowing 10 runs on 10 hits in four innings.
Every Shepherd starter had a hit, led by Shea Sirbaugh's 2-for-2 performance with two runs scored and an RBI.
In the nightcap, Ram sophomore Jessica Sturgill belted a pair of two-run home runs and also doubled to pace her squad to victory. She helped give the hosts a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a blast to center, and she added another shot to left in the third as Shepherd opened a 6-0 lead.
FSU freshman Angela Giuffreda (Frederick, Md./Urbana) smacked a two-run single in the fifth.
Shepherd starter Becky Porter scattered four hits and struck out seven in five innings to improve to 5-0 on the year. Casazza allowed six runs on six hits to fall to 2-2.
Shepherd improved to 9-6, while Frostburg State fell to 3-5.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday when they open their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference slate with a doubleheader at Penn State Behrend beginning at 2:00 p.m.
