SALEM, VA —
Frostburg State lost both of its games on the second day of the Ferrum Invitational Tournament Sunday. The Bobcats were blanked by Emory & Henry 7-0 and then fell to Ferrum 8-4.
E&H got a run in the first on a ground out and then put two more on the board in the second thanks to two Bobcat errors.
E&H scored two more runs in the fourth with help from another Bobcat miscue and added two more runs in the fifth on two more FSU errors.
The Red and Black (5-4) had several scoring chances but left eight runners on base.
Senior Andria Cook (Allegany (Columbia Union)/Cresaptown, Md.) gave up 10 hits and seven runs, but only one run was earned.
FSU made a season-high five errors in the contest.
In game two, Ferrum scored early and often and held on for the win.
The Panthers scored three runs in the first inning on a RBI-single by Kim Cox and a two-out, two-run single by Wendy Hunt.
FSU loaded the bases in the top of the second with two outs but could not score.
Ferrum opened a 5-0 lead in the second on a two-run double from Stacy Porter.
The Red and Black got a run back in the top of the third on an infield single by sophomore Krystal Dixon (Westminster/Westminster, Md.), but Ferrum blew it open with three runs in the bottom of the third.
The Bobcats pulled to within 8-3 in the top of the fifth on back-to-back RBI-doubles by senior Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.) and sophomore Trish Brown (North Carroll/Manchester, Md.).
The Bobcats added their final run in the top of the sixth with a RBI-single from senior Marsha Moats (South Hagerstown/Hagerstown, Md.).
FSU loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate but could not score.
Brown, sophomore Megan Burner (Southern Garrett/Oakland, Md.) and freshman Amanda Griswold (Magruder/Rockville, Md.) each had two hits for the Bobcats, who left 12 runners on base.
For the Panthers, Porter was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and Cox was 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
"We came out flat and played very poorly against Emory & Henry," said head coach Chris Starke. "We waisted a good pitching performance from Andria [Cook]. Ferrum jumped on us early, but I was very proud of how we hung in there and battled back late. We were a few key hits away from making things interesting."
The Bobcats return to action March 20-27 when they travel on their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach to play in the Snowbird Classic.
