Softball Earns Fourth Place in AMCC Tournament with Sweep of La Roche
04/26/2006

FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State swept La Roche on senior day Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Field and clinched fourth place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Softball Tournament. With the sweep, FSU will host La Roche again on Saturday for an opening-round best-of-three series starting at 10:00 am.

Senior pitcher Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) held the Redhawks (20-13, 8-10 AMCC) scoreless and scattered four hits as the Bobcats (19-13, 13-5 AMCC) took game one, 3-0. In the nightcap, FSU scored two runs in the third and three in the fifth to capture a 5-1 win.

In the opening game, the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with RBIs from senior Bethany Seyler (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and sophomore Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County).

The Bobcats added to their lead in the second inning when senior Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) led off the inning with a single and later scored when junior Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) doubled to left field.

La Roche threatened in the third with runners on second and third, but Cook used her third strikeout of the game and a grounder to second to get out of the jam. Both teams had one hit apiece the rest of the game as the Bobcats took the victory.

Cook tossed 7.0 scoreless innings allowing four hits while striking out four. Seyler and Griswold each had two hits, one run and one RBI for Frostburg State.

In the third inning of game two, Seyler gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead when she drove home Griswold and sophomore Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) with a double to center field.

FSU added three runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 advantage. Senior Jessica Smith (LaVale, Md./Allegany) led off the inning with a double to center. Smith would later score on an error by the Redhawk infield. Seyler, who reached base on that same error, scored on a wild pitch and Baldwin closed out the inning when she crossed the plate on a passed ball.

LAR scored their only run of the afternoon in the sixth when Jenna Bibey scored on a Kimberly Moore sacrifice fly.

Cook earned her 19th win of the season after throwing all 7.0 innings. She allowed just four hits, no earned runs while striking out eight. Smith led the Bobcats with two hits and a run scored while Seyler had one double, one run and two RBIs.

FSU returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Washington & Jefferson for a doubleheader at 3:00 pm.
