Softball Eliminated by Penn State Altoona in AMCC Tournament Play
05/02/2003

PITTSBURGH- Frostburg State fell 8-4 to Penn State Altoona in the double-elimination AMCC Softball Tournament Friday afternoon.

The Bobcats ended their season with a 13-12 overall record.

Penn State Altoona blew the game open with a five-run second inning. The Lions used a lead-off error, a single and a walk to load the bases with no outs.

Mary Beth Rykaceski then had a run-scoring single and Jen Patishnock followed with a two-run single. Stacey Detwiler added a two-run double to cap the outburst.

PSA added three more runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Rykaceski.

FSU looked to rally in the fourth inning as junior Stephanie Zych (Gilderland/Slingerlands, N.Y.) laced a one-out triple and freshman Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) followed with a fielder's choice.

Freshman Ashley Martin (North Carroll/Manchester, Md.) then drove both runs in with a double to right center.

The Red and Black added two more in the fifth. Junior Shannon McQuillan (Archbishop Spalding/Bowie, Md.) drew a one-out walk and sophomore Raelee Casazza (Miller Place/Miller Place, N.Y.) followed with a single to left field.

Zych laced a two-out single to plate a a run and Brown singled to drive in another.

Brown and Zych led FSU with 2-for-3 efforts.

Sophomore Jen Vance (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) gave up eight runs and had no strikeouts.

Freshman Dana Garman earned the win for the Lions, pitching a complete game and striking out eight. PSA will play the loser of the Saturday morning game between #1 LaRoche and #3 Pitt-Bradford.

The Bobcats dropped their first game of the tournament, 8-0 to top-seed La Roche, Friday morning.

LaRoche got on top in the first inning with one out when it hit back-to-back singles. A third single went through the legs of the rightfielder, allowing all three runners to score.

In the third inning, another outfield error followed by a two-out single plated the fourth run.

The Redhawks blew it open in the fifth inning with three more runs aided by two more Bobcat errors.

LaRoche capped the scoring in the sixth inning with a lead-off double and a two-out single, making it an 8-0 contest that ended due to the eight-run rule.

Redhawk senior Amy Kurtz held FSU to just one hit - a fourth-inning, two-out single by freshman Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) - in the complete-game effort. She struck out two and induced nine fly-ball outs.

Vance took the loss for FSU despite a solid performance. She pitched all five innings and gave up just two earned runs. She struck out three and walked two.

"We simply made too many mistakes today to beat two good teams," said Bobcat head coach Chris Starke. "In the opener, our defense did us in and spoiled a great effort by Jen. And, in the second game, we put ourselves in too deep a hole to come back against another good pitcher.

"Still, I'm proud that we achieved our preseason goals of winning more games than we lost and advancing to the AMCC tournament. We are a young team with a very bright future."
