GIBSONIA, Pa. —
Frostburg State has been picked to finish second in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference according to a preseason poll among the league’s 10 head coaches.
Two-defending tournament champion Pitt-Bradford is the favorite, while perennial contender La Roche is third.
Last season, Frostburg State finished 26-14 overall and won its first AMCC regular-season title with an 11-1 mark.
The Bobcats hosted the AMCC Tournament but were upset twice by third-seeded Pitt-Bradford. The Panthers finished 22-8 overall and 8-4 in the AMCC regular season last year.
Both squads were selected to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Region Championship Tournament. FSU fell in the first round, while Pitt-Bradford was ousted in the double-elimination round.
La Roche posted 9-14 overall and 8-4 league marks last year.
“I think that’s a fair vote by our coaches,” said FSU Head Coach Chris Starke, whose squad was last year’s conference preseason favorite. “Pitt-Bradford has won the last two AMCC Tournament titles, and until someone proves otherwise, they’re the team to beat. We certainly expect to be playing for the conference championship in May.”
Pitt-Bradford sophomore Kristin Zavinksi is the 2005 Preseason Pitcher of the Year. She went 12-3 with a league-best 1.81 earned run average and earned honorable mention All-AMCC honors last season.
La Roche senior shortstop Chrystal Delgado is the Preseason Player of the Year. Last season, she hit .514 with 21 runs scored and 11 RBIs and shared AMCC Player of the Year honors with Frostburg State junior first baseman Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll).
TheAMCC welcomes three new members to the conference this season — Hilbert, Medaille and Mt. Aloysius. For the first time ever, the AMCC Tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
