ERIE, PA —
Frostburg State snapped a 4-4 tie with a four-run seventh inning and held on for an 8-6 win in the opening game of an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Penn State Behrend Monday afternoon at Behrend Stadium. The host Lions forged a split with an 8-0 win in the nightcap.
In the first game, sophomore Amber Blackmire (Hebron, Md./Mardela) singled in senior Krissy Jackson (Frostburg, Md./Beall) in the seventh to put FSU ahead for good. Sophomore Shannon McQuillan (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) followed with an RBI-single before freshman Kristy Sipes (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) drilled a two-run triple to give the Bobcats an 8-4 lead.
Sipes' hit proved crucial, as Penn State Behrend scored twice in the bottom of the inning and had the tying run at the plate with two outs.
However, FSU freshman Jen Vance (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) induced a pop-up to seal the win.
The Bobcats (7-8-1, 4-3-1 AMCC) jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-single by sophomore Richelle Foor (Everett, Pa./Everett), but the Lions countered with two runs in the home half of the first.
FSU tied the game in the fourth when Vance doubled and later scored on a single by sophomore Lora Thomas (Bowie, Md./Bowie). Penn State Behrend (7-16, 5-1) moved back in front with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
The Bobcats pulled even again by scoring twice in the top of the fifth. Freshman Raelee Casazza (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) reached on an error and moved to third on a double by Foor. Jackson then laced an RBI-single, and Blackmire hit a sacrifice fly to forge a 4-4 tie.
Vance allowed 10 hits and five runs in the complete-game victory to improve to 4-4 on the season.
Jackson and Zych each had three hits and an RBI.
In the nightcap, the Lions exploded for eight runs in the first inning and cruised to the 8-0 victory shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Penn State Behrend took advantage of three walks and two Bobcat errors in the outburst, and senior Kelly Woods held FSU to just four singles in a complete-game effort.
Casazza (3-4) took the loss, working just 1/3 of an inning before being replaced by Vance.
Vance led FSU with two hits in game two.
The Bobcats return to action on Thursday when they visit La Roche in an AMCC doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
