Softball Splits on First Day of Atlantic vs. East Challenge
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -
The Frostburg State softball team opened its season by splitting two games on the first day of the Atlantic vs. East Challenge Friday afternoon. In game one, FSU defeated Lynchburg 3-2 but dropped the second game to Christopher Newport 6-0.
Bobcat sophomore Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) pitched a complete game to earn the victory.
FSU (1-0) scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. Senior Amanda Boswell (Marbury, Md./Lackey) led off the game with a walk and later scored on a single by Potts. Junior Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) later singled off the pitcher's glove to score junior Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll), who walked earlier in the inning.
Lynchburg scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Caroline Cubbage to cut the Frostburg State lead to 2-1.
The teams then battled through two scoreless innings, before FSU struck again in the top of the fourth. Potts reached on a one-out error, advanced to second on a passed ball and later scored on an RBI single by freshman Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack).
Lynchburg threatened in the bottom of the fifth when it put runners on first and second with two outs. But Potts got a ground out to second to end the inning.
Lynchburg pulled to within a run in the bottom of the sixth when Christy Mays doubled to lead of the inning and Cubbage followed with a single. Cubbage moved to second on a sacrifice but Potts again ended the threat with fly out and a ground out.
Both teams went three up and three down in the seventh as FSU pulled out the narrow victory.
Four players for the Bobcats recorded hits. Potts was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Cook and Dabkowski each added a hit and an RBI. Junior Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) finished 1-for-3 with a single.
"This is a big win for us to start the year," said Head Coach Chris Starke. "Lori pitched an outstanding game and our defense was just as strong. We came up with some big hits early and held them off in the end."
In the second game, the Bobcats could only muster four hits in the loss to Christopher Newport.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, but in the top of the fourth, CNU smacked a two-out solo home run to break into the scoring column. In the fifth, the Lady Captains added two more runs to take a 3-0 advantage.
Christopher Newport put the game away in the top of the sixth inning adding three runs to close out the scoring.
Lady Captain starter Janet Fairchild threw a complete game four-hitter to earn the win. Cook took the loss for the Bobcats working four and a third innings allowing three runs on six hits.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they play Moravian at 9:00 am and rival Salisbury at 1:00 pm.
