Myrtle Beach, S.C. -
Frostburg State swept a doubleheader from Felician by scores of 4-1 and 6-4 Tuesday at Socastee High School.
In the opener, senior Andria Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) scattered nine singles and struck out six while walking just one in the complete-game victory. She improved to 5-3 on the year.
The Bobcats (9-6) started the scoring in the second inning when sophomore Megan Burner (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) laced a one-out single and came home on a double by sophomore Jessica Smith (La Vale, Md./Allegany).
FSU tacked on two more runs in the fourth to open a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) drove in a run with a single and sophomore Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) scored on a passed ball.
The Bobcats then increased their lead to 4-0 in the sixth on a fielder’s choice by Smith.
Felician got its lone run in the seventh on an infield single.
FSU worked out of several jams throughout the game. The Golden Falcons had runners on first and second with none out in the first, but the Bobcats turned a double play and Cook recorded a strike out to end the threat.
Felician had runners at second and third with one out in the second, but Cook struck out the next two batters to get out of trouble again. The first two batters also reached in the fourth before the Bobcats retired the next three in order.
In game two, the Bobcats opened a 2-0 lead in the third. Senior Marsha Moats (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a single to right by Brown. Senior Stephanie Zych (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) later came home on a groundout by freshman Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley).
FSU scored two more runs in the fourth to build a 4-0 cushion. Freshman Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) reached on a fielder’s choice, moved to second on a single by Moats and scored on an outfield error on the same play. Moats then came in on a double by Brown.
Felician got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Sarah Otto singled and scored when Kelly Barton’s scorcher through the right side was misplayed for a two-base error.
The Golden Falcons pulled even in the fifth, scoring three times on three hits, a passed ball and an error, and looked for more in the sixth.
However, the Bobcats stepped up their defense and thwarted several scoring chances to keep the game tied. Zych made spectacular diving grabs of two line drives to short, and Moats made a sliding catch in left with two on to end the inning.
FSU took a 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh on an error and a bases-loaded walk, but Felician threatened again in the bottom of the frame.
Potts, who came on in relief of Cook to start the sixth, struck out the first two batters before allowing a single and a double to put runners at second and third. Potts then stabbed a hard come-backer to the circle and threw to first for the final out of the game.
Brown went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Moats was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Potts earned the win after allowing three hits and striking out three in two scoreless innings.
The Bobcats return to action Wednesday when they take on Washington & Jefferson in a doubleheader at Socastee High School beginning at 9:30 am.
