Softball Sweeps Hartwick to Extend Winning Streak to Six
03/30/2004

FROSTBURG, MD — Frostburg State extended its winning streak to a season-high six games with a doubleheader sweep of Hartwick Tuesday afternoon. The Bobcats had to rally in both contests, winning the opener 4-3 and taking the nightcap 8-6 in a game called after four and a half innings due to rain.

The Bobcats improved to 13-6 and matched their win total from last year, when they went 13-12. Hartwick fell to 2-6.

In game one, FSU trailed 3-1 but scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to win.

Sophomore Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) led off the inning with a triple and then scored on a passed ball to make it a 3-2 contest, and senior Lindsey Secrest (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) laced a two-out, two-run single to center to plate the tying and winning runs.

Hartwick had a runner on first with two outs in the seventh but could not score.

Senior Andria Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) allowed eight hits and two earned runs to improve to 7-3 on the season. She has won three straight and has a team-leading nine complete games this year.

In game two, Brown hit a go-ahead three-run home run as part of a six-run fourth inning as the Bobcats overcame a 5-2 deficit to claim the win.

Hartwick jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run home run by Amy King, but FSU cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the frame on a RBI-single by Zych.

The Hawks extended their lead to 4-1 with two unearned runs in the second before the Bobcats answered again in the home half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder).

In the third, King led off with a double and later scored on two passed balls to give Hartwick a 5-2 advantage, but FSU scored six runs on six hits and one error in the fourth to rally for the victory.

Junior Amanda Boswell (Marbury, Md./Lackey) started the comeback with a single, Griswold followed with a hard single to third and senior Marsha Moats (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) sent a liner to right that was misplayed and allowed Boswell to score.

Brown then drilled a three-run shot over the left field fence to give FSU a 6-5 lead, and Burner and sophomore Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) each added run-scoring singles to give the Bobcats an 8-5 cushion.

Hartwick got a run back in the fifth when Katie Holley reached on a two-out outfield error and later scored on a passed ball. The game was called after the top of the fifth due to rain.

Freshman Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) earned the win in relief of Cook, allowing just one hit and one unearned run in the final three innings.

Brown was 2-for-3 with three RBI, a run and a walk.

"I'm proud of how we fought back and came up with some big hits in both games when we needed them," said FSU head coach Chris Starke. "The 30-degree temperatures and rain made it a miserable day to play, but the players did an excellent job of responding to adversity."

The Bobcats return to action Friday when they visit Bridgewater (Va.) for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 pm.
