Softball Sweeps Penn State Behrend

ERIE, PA — The Bobcats,(9-8), swept past Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend on Saturday, winning the first game 7-3 and taking the night cap 7-1. The win brings FSU's AMCC record to 3-3 on the season.

In game one, FSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI single by freshman Ashley Martin (Manchester, Md./North Carroll), but PSB took the lead with two runs in the fifth aided by a Bobcat infield error. However, FSU moved back in front for good with a six-run sixth inning.

Juniors Marsha Moats (South Hagerstown/Hagerstown, Md.) and Stephanie Zych (Guilderland/Slingerlands, Md.) started the inning with back-to-back singles and freshman Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) reached on an error to load the bases.

One-out later, junior Richelle Foor (Everett, Pa./Everett) cleared the bases with a double and then sophomore Raelee Casazza (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) later doubled to cap the scoring. PSB got a run back in the sixth inning, but was unable to threaten past that.

Sophomore pitcher Jen Vance (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) took the win for the Bobcats, going the distance and allowing eight hits, three walks and striking-out five.

Leading hitters for FSU were Foor(2-3) and Zych (2-4). FSU had nine hits and two errors, while PSB had eight hits and three errors.

In game two, the Red and Black got on board again in the first inning. Zych, hit a one-out single and Brown followed with a single. Next, Martin hit a double to score Zych. Foor then reached on an infield error and Brown came home on another infield error.

FSU added another run in the second. Casazza hit a lead-off single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Marsha Moats (South Hagerstown/Hagerstown, Md.) and then scored on a single run by Brown.

PSB got one back in the second, but FSU responded in the third. Casazza doubled and then scored on a Moats single. Then, the Bobcats blew it open in the seventh when Martin hit a three-run triple with two outs.

Freshman Katie Nelson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) took the win for the Bobcats, scattering four hits,walking one and striking-out six. Raff pitched five innings and took the loss for PSB.

While five Bobcats had two hits each, leading hitters for the Bobcats were Martin (2-5) and Brown (4-5). Brown celebrated her 20th birthday with a double, a triple and four RBI.

FSU had 17 hits and also left 15 runners on base with one error. PSB had four hits and four errors.

"We came out focused from the very beginning and played two great ballgames," said head coach Chris Starke. "We got two more outstanding pitching performances and we played very solid defensively."

The Bobcats return to action on Sunday, April 13, when the visit AMCC opponent Lake Erie for a double-header beginning at Noon.
