Softball Sweeps Wells Behind Stellar Pitching Performances
03/21/2004

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior Andrea Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) threw a five-inning perfect game and freshman Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) followed with a two-hit, 10-strikeout effort in the nightcap to lead Frostburg State to a 20-0, 8-0 sweep of Wells Sunday afternoon at Socastee High School.

In the opener, the Bobcats (7-4) benefited from 20 walks and five Express errors to post the easy victory.

FSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first inning thanks to nine walks and two errors. The Bobcats then tacked on five more runs in the second to open a 12-0 cushion.

Senior Lindsey Secrest (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) drew a bases-loaded walk, freshman Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) hit a RBI-single and senior Marsha Moats (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) drilled a three-run double to cap second.

Sophomore Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) slammed a two-run home run to highlight a four-run fourth, and FSU scored four more times in the fifth behind three walks and two more Wells miscues.

Cook struck out seven, including the side in the third, and retired two more hitters on slow tappers back to the circle.

Strong defensive plays from sophomore Jessica Smith (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) and Secrest helped keep the perfect game intact. Smith ended the second inning by throwing out the batter at first on a hit to right field, and Secrest made a nice running catch of a shallow fly ball to center to end the fourth.

Cook enduced a slow groundout to first to end the game.

In the second contest, Potts allowed only a shallow two-out single in the first and a one-out double in the third while fanning a career-high 10. She struck out five straight batters at one point, including three in the fourth.

The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI-single by sophomore Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) and tacked on four more runs in the third.

With two outs, Moats drew a walk and later scored on a double steal. Savoye added another run-scoring single, and another Wells error led to two more Bobcat runs.

Sophomore Megan Burner (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) hit a pinch-hit RBI-single in the fourth to give FSU a 6-0 lead, and the Bobcats closed it out with two more runs in the fifth. Griswold plated a run on an infield single, and Moats ended the contest with another run-scoring single.

The Bobcats return to action Monday when they face Shawnee State in a doubleheader at Socastee High School beginning at 9:30 am.
