Softball Swept by Medaille
04/29/2005

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Frostburg State dropped both games of an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Medaille by scores of 3-1 and 7-4 Friday afternoon.

The Bobcats lost their fourth straight to fall to 16-15 overall and 11-5 in the AMCC, while the Mavericks improved to 16-16 overall and 11-5 in conference play.

In the opener, the teams battled through two scoreless innings before Medaille scored twice in the bottom of the third on RBI doubles by freshman Amanda Baker and junior Sara Vertalino.

The Mavericks took a 3-0 lead in the fifth when freshman Shannon Superczynski singled, advanced to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice bunt.

FSU avoided the shutout with a run in the seventh. Freshman Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) singled with one out and moved to second on an error. One out later, junior Bethany Seyler (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) laced an RBI single to score junior pinch-runner Meredith Remus (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air).

Bobcat junior Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) and Maverick freshman Michelle Peruzzini both pitched complete games. Cook (7-7) allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out five, while Peruzzini gave up one unearned run and scattered six hits.

In the nightcap, FSU jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings, but Medaille scored twice in the third and rallied for four runs in the fifth to post the come-from-behind win.

The Bobcats got to Peruzzini from the beginning, scoring three runs in the first.

FSU loaded the bases on an error, a walk and a single, and junior Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) capitalized with a two-run single. Freshman Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) added an RBI single with two outs to finish the outburst.

Medaille got on the board in their first chance as Superczynski singled, moved to third on another outfield miscue and scored on a sacrifice bunt to cut the deficit to 3-1.

FSU answered in the second when senior Amanda Boswell (Marbury, Md./Lackey) walked and scored on Brown’s two-out triple, but Vertalino smacked a two-run homer in the third to pull the Mavericks to within 4-3.

Medaille then went ahead for good in the fifth, plating four unearned runs thanks to a pair of Bobcat errors. FSU put runners on first and second in the sixth but Peruzzini used a ground out to end the threat and then retired the side in the seventh.

Sophomore Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) allowed eight hits and just two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss for the Bobcats, who tied their season high with five errors.

Peruzzini earned her second complete-game win of the day after giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.
