Softball Swept by Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Washington & Jefferson swept the Frostburg State softball team Thursday afternoon at Brooks Park.

W&J (19-13) scored 10 runs on 10 hits to earn the victory over FSU (19-15) in game one, 10-3. In the nightcap, the Presidents scored seven runs on seven hits to down the Bobcats 7-2.

W&J scored one run in the first inning and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead. FSU answered by tying the ballgame after scoring one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Sophomore Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) had a RBI single in the third, junior Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) had a RBI single in the fourth and sophomore Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to lead the Bobcat rally.

However, the Presidents answered with seven runs in the home half of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Senior pitcher Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) suffered her fifth loss of the season, throwing 6.0 innings allowing 10 runs (five earned) while striking out three. Senior Jessica Smith (LaVale, Md./Allegany) led the way for FSU at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

In game two, Washington & Jefferson jumped out to a 4-0 lead after posting three runs in the first and one in the second. Frostburg State narrowed the gap to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when senior Megan Burner (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) doubled home freshman Molly Bryden (Rock Hall, Md./Kent County).

The Presidents extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth adding three runs to their total. In the seventh, the Bobcats scored one run when senior Bethany Seyler (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) scored on a fielder’s choice.

Seyler took the loss in game two, pitching 1.2 innings giving up four runs (one earned) on four hits. Griswold led the team with two hits.

FSU returns to action on Saturday when it hosts La Roche for the opening round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament. The teams will square off in a best-of-three-series starting at 10:00 am.
