MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
The Frostburg State softball team dropped a pair on games on the opening day of the Snowbird Softball Spring Break Tournament, Monday.
FSU (3-7) dropped both contests to NCAA Division II squads. The first loss came at the hands of West Virginia State, 1-0, and the second to Shepherd, 5-1.
State earned the win over the Bobcats scoring the games only run in the top of the fifth inning.
Senior Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) suffered the loss for Frostburg State pitching 7.0 innings allowing one unearned run on two hits. She also fanned five batters.
Freshman Amber Macintosh (Point of Rocks, Md./Brunswick) led the way at the plate going 2-for-3 while senior Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) and Potts, juniors Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County), Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) and Lindsay Seal (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore (Frederick CC)) and freshman Kelly Filipowicz (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) all recorded one hit in the loss.
In the second game, Shepherd scored three runs in the first and one in both the fourth and fifth innings to outpace the Bobcats. FSU plated its only run in the fourth.
Freshman Katelyn Coffey (Middletown, Md./Middletown) tossed 6.0 innings for FSU allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out six.
Junior Heather Proud (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany (Allegany)) and sophomore Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) along with Griswold, Seal and Macintosh all recorded one hit while Proud had the Bobcats’ only RBI.
FSU returns to action tomorrow for the second day of the tournament when it takes on Haskell at 9:00 am.
