Myrtle Beach, SC -
Frostburg State wrapped up its Spring Break trip in style with a hard-fought doubleheader sweep of Washington & Jefferson Wednesday at Socastee High School.
The Bobcats (11-6) took the opener 6-4 and then claimed an exciting 7-6 victory in eight innings for their fourth straight win.
In game one, FSU scored three times in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Krystal Dixon (Westminster, Md./Westminster) laced a one-out triple and scored on the first of five W&J errors. Freshman Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) added a two-run triple to cap the inning.
The Bobcats increased their lead to 6-0 in the third on three hits and two President miscues, but a FSU throwing error in the bottom of the frame allowed two W& J runners to score with two outs.
The Presidents pulled to within 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball and a RBI-single, but that was as they would get.
Freshman Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) allowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out four in the complete-game effort. She is now 5-3 on the season.
Dixon went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, while Griswold was 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk and two RBI.
In the second contest, sophomore Jessica Smith (La Vale, Md./Allegany) singled home junior pinch-runner Amanda Boswell (Marbury, Md./Lackey) with one out in the bottom of the eighth to lift FSU to the exciting win.
The teams traded single runs in the first inning before W&J scored three times in the third to open a 4-1 advantage.
However, the Bobcats countered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-4 lead.
Sophomore Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) started the rally with a run-scoring single and later scored on a fielder’s choice by sophomore Megan Burner (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett).
Sophomore Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) pulled FSU even with a double, and Potts put the Bobcats back in front with a two-out, two-run double to right.
FSU’s lead was short-lived though, as the Presidents scored twice in the top of the fourth to forge a 6-6 tie.
The teams then battled through three scoreless innings before moving to the international tiebreaker in the eighth.
W&J had the first chance with a runner placed at second base with none out. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, but FSU senior Andria Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) used a groundout and a strikeout to end the threat.
FSU responded in its half of the eighth. Boswell entered at second base and moved to third on a groundout. Smith then blooped a single into center, and Boswell slid just away from the tag to give the Bobcats the thrilling victory.
Potts, Brown, Dixon and Smith each had two hits for FSU.
Cook went all eight innings for the Bobcats, allowing 15 hits and five earned runs while striking out four.
"This was a good experience for us today," said FSU head coach Chris Starke. "We jumped out to a big lead in the opener and let them back in with a few defensive lapses, but we hung tough at the end. In game two, we showed a lot of character in coming back, and we made some key plays on both offense and defense to pull it out."
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday when they host Hartwick in their home-opening doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
