Spaces Still Available in July, August FSU Math Camp Sessions
06/19/2006

Area students still will have an opportunity to enhance their math skills working with a Frostburg State University math professor this summer, with weeklong sessions of Math Camp for students entering grades four through seven.

There will be four more sessions this summer. All meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m.:

• Session III (July 17-July 20) for fourth and fifth graders.

• Session IV (July 24-July 27) for sixth and seventh graders.

• Session V (Aug. 14-Aug. 17) for fourth and fifth graders.

• Session VI (Aug. 21-Aug. 24) for sixth and seventh graders.

In sessions III and V, students explore Arithmetricks, some tricks to do perform arithmetic quickly. Also students explore some basic algebra, geometry, and probability ideas. The problems are fun-oriented, with lots of Web-based problem solving activities and math games and strategies.

In sessions IV and VI, the students will explore George Polya’s four-step problem solving logic: Understand a problem, devise a plan, carry it out, and look back. Students will explore difference problem solving strategies such as guess and check, graphs and table, working backwards and setting up equations.

All these math activities provide a great opportunity for students to enhance their mathematical skills.

Instructor for all the classes will be Dr. Laxman Hegde, who has been teaching mathematics for 25 years, the past 15 years in the FSU Mathematics Department.

Cost for the Math Camp is $75. For information, contact Hegde at lhegde2@gmail.edu or (301) 687-4384 or visit the Web site at foundationmath.com.

FSU is committed to making all of its programs, services and activities accessible to persons with disabilities. To request accommodations through the ADA Compliance Office, call (301) 687-4102, TDD (301) 687-7955.
