FROSTBURG, MD —
Frostburg State University has named Chris Starke its new head softball coach, Athletic Director Ralph Brewer announced recently. Starke replaces Becky Keller, who resigned last month to pursue her master's degree in counseling at West Virginia University.
Starke, who has served as FSU's sports information director since July 2000, owns a wealth of softball coaching experience. He was the assistant softball coach at Division II Shepherd (W.Va.) College from 1998-99 and was also a volunteer assistant with the Martinsburg (W.Va.) summer travel teams for four years.
"We are fortunate to have someone on our staff with Division II coaching experience," Brewer commented. "Chris is dedicated to the building of our program, and he has an excellent foundation begun by Coach Keller."
"I am very grateful for the opportunity to lead the Bobcat softball program," said Starke. "Frostburg State is a quality academic institution with great facilities, including our new softball complex. We have a strong nucleus of returning players to lead us in the upcoming years."
The Bobcats are coming off an 8-15-1 season, which included a 5-6-1 mark in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
"I think youth, weather and several long road trips played a factor in last year's performance," Starke said. "I see us being relatively young again next season, and we'll be focusing more on the small things that will ultimately determine our success. We've already started the players on a summer strength and conditioning program, and that's the first of many steps we're taking to improve."
