Statement on the Passing of William Donald Schaefer
04/20/2011

Frostburg State University wishes to acknowledge with sadness the passing of a true friend of Western Maryland, former Gov. William Donald Schaefer. While he is most strongly associated with the city of Baltimore, as governor, he was keenly aware of the needs of our part of the state. FSU in particular benefited from his championing of completion of the Allegany County portion Interstate 68. It’s hard to imagine where FSU and our region would be today without this vital transportation link. Please take a moment to consider the message from Chancellor William E. “Brit” Kirwan, in which he explains Gov. Schaefer’s role as the architect of the University System of Maryland and the debt we owe as an institution of the USM: http://www.usmd.edu/newsroom/news/971 In 1990, FSU awarded Gov. Schaefer the University Medallion, the highest honor bestowed by the institution. Then-President Herb. F. Reinhard said, “The presentation to Gov. Schaefer is not because of the position he holds, but because of the uniqueness with which he carries out his duties as chief executive officer of the state, and for his lifetime of public service to the citizens of the State of Maryland.” As Gov. Martin O’Malley said today, William Donald Schaefer's life was spent in service to the communities he loved, and his unrelenting drive to “do it now” was a constant pursuit of a better Maryland.
