Swimming & Diving Earns Road Sweep of Bethany

FROSTBURG, MD — The Frostburg State swimming and diving teams swept host Bethany (W.Va.) College Wednesday night. The Bobcat men defeated the Bison, 113-46, for their fourth straight win, while the FSU women posted a 111-67 victory and won for the third time in their last four dual meets.

In men's action, the Bobcats (6-3) won the first five events and 10 of the evening's 11 races.

Senior Jay Garner (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard), sophomore Kevin Nolan (Annandale, Va./Annandale), freshman Patrick Serrano (Olney, Md./Blake) and freshman Matt Marrapodi (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) opened the meet by winning the 400-yard medley relay in 4:21.28.

Senior Derrick Jackson (Beltsville, Md./High Point), sophomore Ben Marrapodi (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) and junior Matt Brew (Silver Spring, Md./Sherwood) each won a pair of individual events.

Jackson captured both the 1,000-yard freestyle (13:49.24) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:50.18), while Marrapodi claimed the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.28) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.53).

Brew was a winner in the 100-yard freestyle (59.14) as well as the 200-yard breaststroke (3:07.75).

Other winners for the Bobcat men were senior Kelly Ryan (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) in the 50-yard freestyle (22.74), Nolan in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.48) and sophomore Andrew Mlynarski (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) in the 3-meter diving (166.30 points).

On the women's side, FSU (3-6) dominated by winning 10 of the 11 events as well.

Junior Siona Walsh (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) powered the Bobcats with three victories. Walsh teamed with senior Laura Jacquette (Tolchester, Md./Kent County), freshman Melody Hanna (Frostburg, Md./Beall) and freshman Stephanie Carrigo (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) to win the 400-yard medley relay (5:08.06) and later captured both the 200-yard freestyle (2:25.29) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:40.65).

Senior Alex Morrison (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) picked up wins in both the 50-yard freestyle (29.41) and 200-yard butterfly (2:36.75), while junior Jessie Bley (Fort Washington, Md./Gwynn Park) claimed victories in the 200-yard individual medley (2:31.53) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:51.35).

Jacquette added a win in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:59.66), and Hanna was a winner in the 100-yard freestyle (1:03.97).

Senior Cindy Reese (Westminster, Md./Westminster) took home the 3-meter diving with 201.55 points.

Frostburg State returns to action on Saturday at Penn State Behrend beginning at 2 p.m.
