FROSTBURG, MD —
The Frostburg State swimming and diving teams split their season-opening meet with Division II Salem International Friday evening at Bobcat Natatorium. The FSU women posted a 129-99 victory, while the Bobcat men fell, 114-106.
On the women's side, the Bobcats fell behind early before overtaking the Tigers in the diving and sprints.
Freshman Kristen Moats (Loudoun County/Leesburg, Va.) captured the 200-meter freestyle in 2:17.59, while senior Siona Walsh (Bellows Free Academy/Twin Falls, Idaho) captured the 50-meter freestyle in 30.71 seconds.
Senior Lauren Crystal (Atholton/Columbia, Md.) won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:15.04, turned in a runner-up showing in the 200-meter IM in 2:51.74 and later teamed with Moats, Walsh and freshman Heather Hamor (Lackey/Nanjemoy, Md.) to win the 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:58.19. Hamor also placed second in the 800-meter freestyle in 10:21.20.
Senior Jessie Bley (Gwynne Park/Ft. Washington, Md.) took home the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:26.85 and finished fourth in the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 10:48.90.
Senior Cindy Reese (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events, scoring 221.65 and 187.00 points, respectively.
On the men's side, Salem International built an early lead and held off the Bobcats over the final events.
Freshman Sean Leaman (Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Bethesda, Md.) won the 400-meter freestyle and finished second in the 800-meter freestyle in 9:48.77, while junior Randy Belt (Patuxent/Lusby, Md.) won the both the 1- and 3-meter diving with 162.84 and 149.90 points, respectively.
Other winners included junior Jay Mayden (Arlington Baptist/Baltimore, Md.) in the 200-meter IM (2:19.12) and freshman Jay Ferrari (Riverhill/Columbia, Md.) in the 100-meter butterfly (1:01.18).
The Bobcats received second-place finishes from freshman CC Williams (Fort Mill/Fort Mill, S.C.) in the 200-meter freestyle (2:13.99), junior Brian Flynn (Shepaug Valley/Bridgewater, Conn.) in the 50-meter freestyle (25.91 seconds) and freshman Chris Williams (Baltimore City College/Baltimore, Md.) in the 100-meter freestyle (57.57).
Frostburg State returns to action tomorrow in a dual meet at Washington & Jefferson beginning at 1:00 pm.
