Swimming & Diving Splits with Rival Penn State Behrend

FROSTBURG, MD — Frostburg State split a dual swimming and diving meet with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Penn State Behrend Saturday at Bobcat Natatorium. The Bobcat men posted a 122-104 victory to improve to 3-6 on the season, while the women fell 110-103 to fall to 4-6.

Junior Chris Williams (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) won a pair of events for the seventh meet this season as he captured both the 50-meter freestyle (24.50) and the 100-meter freestyle (55.49). Classmate Sean Leaman (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was vicotrious in the 800-meter freestayle (9:35.11), while finishing second in the 200-meter individual medley (2:32.18) and 400-meter freestyle (4:39.50).

Sophomore Kyle Meyer (Clifton, Va./Centreville) placed first in the one-meter diving competition (184.35 points) while teammate junior Steve Ramsey (Olney, Md./Magruder) finished runner-up (173.25 points). Ramsey later captured victory in three-meter diving (144.05 points).

In the 200-meter freestyle, junior Brendon Craig (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) finished in first place with a time of 2:13.81. Sophomore Patrick Serrano recorded a second place finish in the 100-meter butterfly (1:16.11) and freshman Nate Haugh (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) finished second in 100-meter freestyle (1:03.65).

In the 200-meter medley relay, the team of Meyer, Craig, Williams and sophomore Tom Sandor (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) finished in winning fashion with a time of 2:15.70. In the same event, sophomore Matt Nestor (Westminster, Md./Calvert Hall), junior Calvin Kiple (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston), freshman Allen Miller (Seabrook, Md./DuVal) and Serrano captured second (2:40.84).

Junior Kristin Moats (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) led the women by winning two events, the 200-meter individual medley (2:38.35) and the 100-meter butterfly (1:12.56). She also recorded second in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:25.02). Junior Heather Hamor (Nanjemoy, Md./Lackey) had a good afternoon winning the 50-meter freestyle (29.91) and the 100-meter freestyle (1:05.16).

In the 100-meter backstroke, freshman Beth Pallotta (Columbia, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and sophomore Amy Contino (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland Regional) finished first and second with times of 1:17.47 and 1:19.67, respectively.

Freshman Shannon Dunnigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) claimed three second place finishes in the 800-meter freestyle (10:19.77), the 200-meter individual medley (2:42.26) and the 400-meter freestyle (5:03.40). Senior Melody Hanna (Frostburg, Md./Beall) grabbed second in the 200-meter freestyle (2:20.94) and second in the 100-meter butterfly (1:14.33).

In relay action, Pollota, Hamor, Hanna and Cotino finished in the second spot with a time of 2:18.52. In the 200-meter freetsyle relay, freshman Julie Groetzinger (LaVale, Md./Bishop Walsh), Erin Winters, freshman Stephanie Deming (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) and sophomore Megan Falls (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) recorded a time of 2:25.96, good for second place.

Frostburg State returns to action on February 9-12 at Grove City for the AMCC Classic.
