The Frostburg State swimming teams battled Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponents Penn State Behrend and Penn State Altoona, Saturday at the Junker Center.
The FSU men downed PSA 50-43 but lost to PSB 56-40. Meanwhile, the Bobcat women lost to PSA 54-40 and PSB 62-38.
Freshman Griffen Williams (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) led the way with a pair of victories. He won the fourth event, the 1,000-yard freestyle, in 11:11.30 and later captured the 500-yard freestyle title in 5:27.97.Williams later placed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.27).
Sophomore Charlie Reimers (Leonard, Md./Patuxent) was the only other men’s swimmer to win an event, taking the 200-yard breaststroke title in 2:50.63.
Freshman Matt Horton (Centerville, Va./Westfield) landed a pair of runner-up finishes; the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.19) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:52.04).
Freshman Scott Gantz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) recorded second place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:23.85) and junior Will Cross (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) captured third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:54.57).
The 400-yard medley relay team of Gantz, Thornton, Horton and junior Nate Haugh (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) finished second in 4:11.42.
Junior Shannon Dunnigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and freshman Thirza Roberto (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led the way for the women, each with a first and second-place finish. Dunnigan placed first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:45.26) and later captured second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:29.24) while Roberto earned a victory in the 500-yard freestyle ( 5:27.97) and was runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:44.52).
Sophomore Malinda Yost (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) was second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.32) and senior Megan Falls (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) took third in the 500-yard freestyle (6:01.42).
The women’s relay teams turned in a pair of second-place finishes. The 400-yard medley relay team of Dunnigan, Yost, Roberto and sophomore Michelle Nash (Columbia, Md./Hammond) finished second in 4:37.06 and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Falls, Dunnigan, Yost and freshman Sarah Sweet (Kensington, Md./Holy Cross Academy) were runner-up in 4:21.69.
Frostburg State returns to action Wednesday, January 24 when it competes at Hood at 4:00 pm.
