Swimming Falls to Washington & Jefferson in Season Opening Meet

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State swimming teams fell to Washington and Jefferson in their season opening meets, Saturday.

Freshman Diana Tobin led the FSU women with three first-place finishes. She took home the first of her titles in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.41.

She also captured victories in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.76) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:31.57).

Sophomore Shannon Dunnigan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) also had a fine performance with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle (5:56.69) and a pair of third-place finishes in both the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.90) and 1,000-yard freestyle (11:53.78).

Senior Megan Falls (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) recorded second in the 500-yard freestyle (6:15.28), freshman Sara Sweet was runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle (1:10.26) and Paige Wolf was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:13.10).

The 200-meter medley relay team of sophomore Kiara Yarberough (Baltimore,Md./Western), Tobin, Sweet and Wolf captured third in 2:26.13.

On the men’s side, sophomore Pat Hutchinson (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) led the team with two first-place finishes. He captured victory in the 100-yard freestyle (55.39) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.42).

Senior Matt Nestor (Westminster, Md./Calvert Hall) and freshman Griffen Williams were the only other Bobcat men to capture first in an event. Nestor earned a win in 100-yard backstroke (1:22.67) and Williams was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle (5:42.09).

Senior Will Cross (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) had a pair of second-place finishes in the 500-yard (6:02.18) and 1,000-yard freestyles (12:30.49) while Nate Haugh recorded third in the same events with times of 6:34.28 and 13:42.30.

Freshman Scott Gantz had a solid opening meet in a FSU uniform with a runner-up finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:30.30) and a third-place showing in the 50-yard freestyle (25.04).

Freshman Matt Horton, Williams, Gantz and Haugh combined to take third in the 200-yard medley in 1:52.36.

Frostburg State returns to action Friday, November 10 when it hosts Fairmont State at 5:00 pm.
